Temperament

Temperament is a set of innate traits, genetically determined and revealed already at the beginning of human life. Hippocrates is considered the creator of the first concept of temperament.

What is temperament? It is a set of traits that affect how an individual reacts to various life situations. It is partly genetically determined and partly shaped by life experiences.

According to Polish researchers dealing with temperament, Jan Strelau and Bogdan Zawadzki, temperament is part of the personality structure, is characterized by relative stability throughout life, has a biological basis, and its features are noticeable already in early childhood.

The oldest known theory of temperament was created by the Greek physician Hippocrates. According to him, temperament depends on four bodily fluids (humors), which are: yellow bile, black bile, red blood, and phlegm from the lungs. Maintaining a balance between these fluids was supposed to guarantee physical health. Based on the increased presence of the fluids, four temperament types were distinguished:

  1. Sanguine – cheerful, open, sociable, creative [yellow]
  2. Choleric – explosive, irritable, impulsive, bossy, dominant [red]
  3. Phlegmatic – slow, caring, altruistic, balanced [green]
  4. Melancholic – pessimist, calm, hardworking, dreamer [blue]

Most of us, however, are a mixture of individual temperaments. We distinguish:

  • consistent mixtures (choleric + sanguine; phlegmatic + melancholic)
  • complementary mixtures (melancholic + choleric; sanguine + phlegmatic)
  • opposing mixtures (sanguine + melancholic; choleric + phlegmatic)
