Verbal messages

Verbal communication is interpersonal communication that uses voice, and its tools are spoken and written language. Despite apparent clarity, verbal communication has its limitations. It often requires interpretation, and poorly chosen words can lead to misunderstandings. Numerous studies prove that the way of speaking can be more important for the recipient of the message than the content of the transmitted information.

Possible obstacles in verbal communication

Obstacles to effective verbal communication include, among others:

  • Different languages used by the communicating people.
  • Accent. Even when people use the same language, e.g., English, an accent (such as Irish, Welsh, Australian, British, American) can interfere with understanding words and the message.
  • Different understanding of words or phrases. Sometimes it depends on dialect, upbringing, education.
  • Speech impediments, sometimes making it difficult to understand the sender.
  • Emotions. Strong emotions can make communicating people unable to convey their thoughts precisely, or, for example, in anger say something they didn’t mean to say at all.
